Distance therapy may promote more client openness, study suggests

Clients' participation in psychotherapy tends to be higher when they are not face-to-face with their therapists, according to a study in the October issue of Journal of Counseling Psychology. Magazine Article (October 2002)

There is even an association dedicated to distance therapy!

I spent 2.5 years working with another therapist (Bud Mazeiko) over the phone.  In some sessions I was the therapist and some I was the subject.  So I know, first hand, without a doubt that it works quite well via telephone.

Via phone is great for you because:

  1. It is more private for you.
  2. You'll be able to relax much more, which always helps.
  3. You'll be more comfortable at home rather than in an office.

Most people are more comfortable in their own environment.  Staying at home benefits you in several ways.  You don't spend any money getting to an office.  You don't have to find an office and you don't have to worry about directions or getting lost.

Before working together you will be well informed and extremely comfortable with the process.  We will get the environment just right.  Clear communication between you and I will be firmly established.  And then we get-er-done!

If we will be conducting a telephone session I need you to have a few things all setup before I call you.

I require that you have a headset or earphones.  Headsets are more comfortable as they rest over your ears but earphones also work well.  This is an easy thing to not do but it could make the difference between success and failure.

I prefer you to use a two ear headset.  It blocks out background noise and allows you to focus on my voice much more... and focus is the name of the game!

- Using a cell phone?  Make sure it's fully charged... better yet plug it in during our sessions.

- Make sure you have full bars!  Full reception is a must if using a cell phone.

- Your neck must be supported.

- You are wearing lose comfortable clothing.  No shoes, loosen belt...

- Contact lenses out, glasses off.

- No fluids 2 hours before our session - use the restroom to empty your bladder before I call you.

- I will be calling you, you do not have to worry about incurring charges.

- If you take medication that makes you sleepy or unfocused, abstain from taking meds 24 hours before
our session.  ALWAYS ASK YOUR DOCTOR FIRST.

- All pets, other phones, other distractions are out of the room.  Make sure no one will disturb you during
  our session.
